“If there had been a home for my son, my master would not have forced me to abort him.”
This phrase changed our lives and the course of our work in Bangladesh. As you know, Joy has been visiting the women and children in the brothels regularly with a local NGO worker. She’s offering a listening ear and researching sustainable ways she can help the women and children break the cycle of exploitation. Some of the women, many of whom are teenagers, are pregnant. One week Joy met with four pregnant ladies, but the next week only three came to sit with her. The fourth mother-to-be, Samia, arrived just as their meeting was ending. Joy knew her baby was due soon and asked Samia how she was doing. In tears, Samia answered, “If there had been a home for my son, my master would not have forced me to abort him.” At the time, the news was too sad to comprehend. But the news was also all too real of an example of the lives lived and taken in the brothel. Samia was expecting a boy. Boys do not have much value in the brothel. Therefore her master, called a “madam,” forced her to abort him. Samia had hoped to find a home or someone who could raise her son before his birth, but she couldn’t. Therefore her master took drastic measures. Pray for Samia as Joy comforts her and wisdom as we seek to help the helpless.
